In Honor of Mother’s Day

by Brittany Kirby on May 12, 2013

When I was a child my mother said to me, “If you become a soldier, you’ll be a general.  If you become a monk, you’ll be the Pope.”  Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso.

-Pablo Picasso, Artist

A Mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.

-Tenneva Jordan, writer

When your Mother asks, “Do you want a piece of advice?”  it’s a mere formality.  It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no.  You’re going to get it anyway.

-Erma Bombeck, writer and humorist

You may have tangible wealth untold; caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.  Richer than you can never be, I had a Mother who read to me.

-Strickland Gillilan, poet and humorist

Behind me, on one bank, is the tribe of women who are not mothers. They drink coffee, stay up late, skip meals, plan careers, change lovers, study Sanskrit, and write grant proposals for a five year study of tropical cloud forests.  In front of me, on the other bank, is the tribe of mothers.  They arrive late, leave early, are badly in need of haircuts, talk a lot about nap schedules, know way too much about guinea pigs, and have to hang up now.

-Sandra Steingraber, biologist and speaker

Making a decision to have a child – it’s momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.

-Elizabeth Stone, writer

I know God will not give me anything I can’t handle.  I just wish he didn’t trust me so much.

-Mother Teresa, nun and Nobel Laureate

Of all the haunting moments of motherhood, few rank with hearing your own words come out of your daughter’s mouth.

-Victoria Secunda, psychologist

No one in the world can take the place of your mother.  Right or wrong, from her viewpoint you are always right.  She may scold you for little things, but never for the big ones.

-Harry Truman, U.S. President

Imagine a novel in which a woman took in a stranger who was unable to walk or talk or even eat by himself.  She fell completely in love with him at first sight, fed and clothed and washed him, and gradually helped him to become more competent and independent, spent more than half her income on him, nursed him through sickness, and thought about him more than anything else.  And after about twenty years of this she helped him find a young wife and move far away.  Caring for children is an awfully fast and efficient way to experience at least a little saintliness.

-Alison Gopnik, psychologist

Happy Mother’s Day to my forever gorgeous and wonderful mother. I love you so very much. I hope you are having an incredible trip. -B
