When your only daughter has recently given birth to your only granddaughter, and in the same hospital where your husband drove you in the middle of the night 41 years ago, Mother’s Day feels like much more than a Hallmark Card holiday. Add in that my own dear Mother Virginia is 94 and slipping away gently. A time to appreciate and value the most fundamental and honorable relationship all humans and living creatures have.
“The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.” William Russ Wallace, 1865 poem
“If at first you don’t succeed, try doing it the way Mom told you to in the beginning.” Unknown
“Mother’s love is peace. It need not be acquired. It need not be deserved.” Erich Fromm
“There is no way to be a perfect Mother, and a million ways to be a good one.” Jill Churchill
“Acceptance, tolerance, bravery, compassion. These are the things my Mom taught me.” Lady Gaga
“My Mother is my root, my foundation. She planted the seed that I base my life on; and that is the belief that the ability to achieve starts in your mind.” Michael Jordan
“If you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do well matters very much.” Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
“If nothing is going well, call your Grandmother.” Italian proverb
“Motherhood is the biggest gamble in the world. It is the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary -it’s an act of infinite optimism.” Gilda Radner
“Imagine a novel in which a woman took in a stranger who was unable to walk or talk or even eat by himself. She fell completely in love with him at first sight, fed and clothed and washed him, and gradually helped him to become more competent and independent, spent more than half her income on him, nursed him through sickness, and thought about him more than anything else. And after about 20 years of this she helped him find a young wife and move far away. Caring for children is an awfully fast and efficient way to experience at least a little saintliness.” Alison Gopnik, psychologist
