Helen Keller

by Hilary Gauntt on November 26, 2011

Our book club has been discussing the amazing life and accomplishments of Helen Keller. It is incomprehensible how much she was able to learn and experience with such severe disabilities; a continuing inspiration for us to set our goals higher and count our blessings.  Her optimism given her circumstances is astonishing. She left us with pages of thought provoking quotations; here are just a few to make us pause and feel hopeful.

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”

“The struggle of life is one of our greatest blessings. It makes us patient, sensitive, and Godlike.  It teaches us that although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.”

“I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”

“No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars or sailed an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.”

“The best way out is always through.”

“What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, For all that we love deeply becomes a part of us.”

“Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows.”

“Change:  A bend in the road is not the end of the road…..Unless you fail to make the turn.”

Thank you, Hilary… these are truly inspirational… what a unique, soul Helen Keller! And so beautiful!

We’re making Cassoulet-Style Italian Sausages and White Beans in the next few days per a glorious review from my mom. Will let you know how it goes, but I’m OPTIMISTIC it will be nothing short of delicious.

Love from rainy ol Seattle …
